he abandoned her
when his only duty
was to stay.
unprepared failures could pave
her first steps, and
mistakes could fill
the toy chest
and it would be her perfect love,
but he had to be present
to know the sound of her silence
and determine it pain,
or feel his day light because of her laughter.
he abandoned her
when his only duty was to stay.
it broke her, brought her fears,
trust issues of turned backs.
she closed doors, without looking back.
it broke her. it broke them-
the people who loved her
and saw her turn her back.
he abandoned her
when his only duty
was to stay.
now she’s becoming like you –
like you, she’s an athlete,
with the sport of walking away.
(like you)
